Harnessing the Power of Nature for Climate Resilience: EU4ClimateResilience at COP17 Green Zone
GIZ Armenia, within the framework of the EU4ClimateResilience project, hosted two panel discussions at the COP17 Green Zone under the theme “Operationalizing National Adaptation Plans through Nature-Based Solutions.”
Held at the Main Stage of the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan, Armenia, the 90-minute session brought together representatives from government institutions, civil society organisations, EU-supported projects and environmental experts.
The discussions explored the role of nature-based solutions (NbS) in water security, ecosystem restoration and climate adaptation, highlighting the importance of scaling up successful local initiatives and integrating these approaches into national adaptation plans.
Bridging Local Action and National Policy
The event highlighted how European Union-supported initiatives in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) region contribute to ecosystem restoration, local municipal adaptation and national climate policy development.
The programme featured opening remarks from Vaclav Sterba, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation; Letizia Carnevali, Portfolio Manager at GIZ Armenia; and Nona Budoyan, Head of the Climate Policy Department at the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Armenia.
Scaling Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Resilience in the Eastern Partnership
The first panel, moderated by Hovik Sayadyan, Demo Projects Advisor at EU4ClimateResilience, explored how successful local pilot initiatives and municipal demonstration projects can be scaled up to support broader climate resilience efforts.
Panellists Astghine Pasoyan (Energy Saving Foundation), Liana Asoyan (Blejan NGO) and Ashot Giloyan (Adviser, Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia) shared insights on local implementation, municipal readiness and opportunities for expanding nature-based solutions across the region.
Aligning EU-Funded Initiatives with National Adaptation Strategies
The second panel, moderated by Hayrapet Hakobyan, NDC Partnership In-country Facilitator, examined how EU-supported regional initiatives can contribute to national climate adaptation frameworks.
The discussion featured Nona Budoyan (Ministry of Environment of Armenia), Aram Gevorgyan (EU4Sevan+), Diana Yeritspokhyants (EU4ClimateResilience) and Yannick Pochon (OiEau / EU4GreenRecovery East).
Panellists explored opportunities to strengthen the links between local adaptation measures, regional cooperation and national policies, with particular attention to water resource management, ecosystem restoration and the integration of nature-based solutions into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
Participants also exchanged perspectives on transboundary green recovery, water resource management and opportunities for cooperation among government institutions, civil society organisations and EU-supported projects.
The event provided an opportunity to share practical experiences and foster dialogue on how nature-based solutions can contribute to building more climate-resilient communities and sustainable economies across the Eastern Partnership region.
