EU4ClimateResilience Joins COP17 Discussion on Biodiversity Protection and Climate Adaptation
On 28 October, the EU4ClimateResilience project joined EU4Green Recovery East, EU4Environment and EU4Sevan+ for a side event at the Armenian Pavilion during COP17 in Yerevan, exploring how global biodiversity targets can be translated into concrete action across Eastern Partnership countries.
Jointly organised by the participating projects, the event brought together representatives from Armenia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to exchange experiences, achievements and challenges in biodiversity protection. Opening remarks were delivered by Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Environment, Ara Mkrtchyan, and EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos.
The discussion highlighted the close links between biodiversity conservation, water management, pollution reduction and climate adaptation. Participants emphasised practical approaches such as river basin management plans, ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions and the protection of Emerald Network sites.
Other priorities included improving environmental data, strengthening institutional capacities, securing adequate financing and aligning national environmental legislation with EU standards, particularly Chapter 27 of the EU acquis.
The event also underscored the importance of regional cooperation and knowledge exchange in addressing shared environmental challenges, bringing together complementary EU-funded initiatives working towards biodiversity protection and climate resilience in the Eastern Partnership region.
